Section 8 Homeownership Counseling

The program has been designed by HUD to assist Section 8 voucher holders in purchasing houses and utilizing the voucher subsidy towards the mortgage. Working with housing authority offices, Coalition staff provide education, technical assistance and support during the home buying process to Section 8 voucher holders. The program is conducted in three stages:

Education sessions- 8 hours in length, the sessions cover the entire home buying process. Upon completion of the program, the attendees receive a certificate.
Individual counseling-the counselors meet with interested households from the first stage and assess their readiness. Issues of credit status and history, budgeting and mortgage qualifying are discussed.
Home purchasing-this stage is the final stage and voucher holders who get to this stage, have qualified for a mortgage and identified a home for purchase. After the home is purchased, a post-counseling session is held.

NOTE: This program is only available by arrangement through a housing authority. Individuals receiving Section 8 should contact their housing authority to find out about homeownership options.
