Persons who are renting or buying a home in New Jersey are protected against discrimination by federal and state fair housing laws.

It is illegal to:

Refuse to rent or sell a property
Refuse to negotiate
Set different term or conditions
Provide different housing services
Falsely deny that housing is available

Because of a person's:

Race or color
National origin
Religion
Sex
Familial status (presence of children under the age of eighteen)
Disability
Nationality
Source of Income (Including Section 8)
Marital status
Sexual Orientation

Coalition staff assist people victimized by discrimination in the following ways:

Verifying complaints
Advocating when appropriate
Preparing cases
Filing with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights (DCR), or private attorneys
